What a Tesla Powerwall 3 costs in 2026

One Powerwall 3 typically costs $13,000–$16,500 installed, before any utility incentive. Each one stores 13.5 kWh, puts out up to 11.5 kW and has a solar inverter built in. Expansion units add storage without another inverter.

The 30% federal tax credit for home batteries (25D) ended on December 31, 2025, so a battery bought and installed in 2026 gets no federal credit.

Who installs a Powerwall

Tesla sells and installs Powerwall through Tesla and its Certified Installers, usually alongside solar. We don't quote battery installs. What we can do is get your EV charger, and the panel work around it, quoted by a local licensed electrician, so it's ready before the battery arrives.

Will a Powerwall charge your EV in an outage?

Usually not, and that's often by design. A Level 2 charger at 48 amps draws 11.5 kW, which is the whole continuous output of one Powerwall 3. A full 13.5 kWh battery would add only about 40 miles of range before your fridge, lights and Wi-Fi had nothing left.

  • Partial-home backup: the charger stays on the main panel and simply pauses in an outage.
  • Whole-home backup: the charger is on backup, so the system needs a way to limit or stop charging when the grid is down. Ask your battery installer how theirs handles it.

Either way, the charger needs its own dedicated circuit, and where that circuit lands matters once a battery is in the picture.

Panel space for a charger and a battery

A charger on a 60A circuit and a battery system both need room in your panel and in your service's capacity. On a 200A panel, both usually fit. On a 100–150A panel, the charger quote should include a load calculation, and the answer may be a lower amp setting, a load-managed charger, or one panel upgrade that serves both. How to tell if your panel needs work. Which electrical code applies in Wake Forest.

Installing an EV charger now, a battery later

  • Tell the electrician a battery may come later, so the load calculation counts it.
  • Leave the wall space beside the panel clear: batteries usually mount near it.
  • Keep breaker spaces open, or plan the panel upgrade now instead of twice.
  • Pick a charger with adjustable current or load management.
  • Ask for an itemized invoice. You'll need it for any utility credit and for the battery installer.

Timing helps here: the Duke Energy Charger Prep Credit covers panel upgrades done for an EV charger, so if your panel needs work, doing it with the charger can bring the cost down. See how the credit works.

Duke Energy's home battery incentive: PowerPair

Duke Energy's PowerPair pilot pays a one-time incentive of up to $9,000 for solar and a battery installed together by a Duke Trade Ally: $0.36 per watt of solar (up to 10 kW) and $400 per kWh of battery (up to 13.5 kWh, one Powerwall's worth). A battery on its own doesn't qualify, and you commit to a Duke solar rate.

  • Duke Energy Progress: Full since late 2025; new applicants go on a waitlist (as of 2026-09-24).

Rates from Duke's PowerPair terms; room left from Duke's count as reported by EcoGen America.

Don't sign a battery contract that counts on PowerPair money until Duke confirms it in writing. PowerPair is separate from the Duke Energy Charger Prep Credit for EV chargers.

Vehicle-to-home: your EV as the backup battery

Some EVs can power a house in an outage through a bidirectional charger and a transfer switch. It's all electrician work, with a permit.

Other Teslas can't power a home yet. If you drive a Cybertruck and have or plan a Powerwall 3, your Wall Connector becomes part of the backup system, so it's worth installing it with that in mind.

Questions

How much does a Tesla Powerwall cost in Wake Forest?

One Powerwall 3 typically costs $13,000 to $16,500 installed in 2026, before incentives. Whole-home backup with two or more batteries, a panel upgrade or adding solar raises it.

Is there a tax credit for a Powerwall in 2026?

No federal one. The 30% residential clean energy credit ended on December 31, 2025. Duke's PowerPair pilot pays up to $9,000 for solar and a battery together, but its room is limited.

Can a Powerwall charge my EV during a power outage?

It can, but most systems keep the EV charger off backup. A 48-amp charger uses the whole output of one Powerwall 3 and would drain it in a little over an hour.

Do I need a panel upgrade for a Powerwall and an EV charger?

On a 200A panel, usually not. On 100 to 150 amps, ask for a load calculation that counts both. A panel photo lets a local licensed electrician check before quoting the charger.

Should I install my EV charger before or after a Powerwall?

Either works. If the charger comes first, tell the electrician a battery is planned so the circuit, panel space and any panel upgrade are done once.

Can you install my Powerwall?

No. Powerwall is sold through Tesla and its Certified Installers. We connect Wake Forest homeowners with a local licensed electrician for EV charger installs, including the panel work a future battery will share.
